Archbishop Akinola Dismisses Retirement Rumors
CONN/110305
Rumors making the rounds that the Primate of the Church Of Nigeria, Archbishop Peter J. Akinola is retiring at the end of the year 2005 has been dismissed by Him. The 61 year old Metropolitan is required by the constitution of the Church to retire at the age of 70 which will be year 2014. However, the pace-setting Archbishop hopes to set a new trend in the African Church by voluntarily retiring when he turns 65 in 2009. “With God’s protection and enabling power, there are still many more years of active work for this Primate” says Akinola dismissing the rumors as unfounded.
Born in 1944, Peter was
ordained a Priest in 1979 after many years of evangelistic work all over
Northern Nigeria. Elected the pioneer Bishop of Abuja in 1989 again after many
years of laboring to found and build churches in the new territory, he was
presented as Archbishop in 1997 and Metropolitan and Primate in 2000. With a
clear vision, he has been a willing vessel used by God to lead the Church of
Nigeria to great exploits and is widely respected all over the world for his
principled stand on the ‘Faith once delivered to the saints.’
