CONN/210306
Abuja, March 13, 2006- The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has directed all Christians to stay at home on March 27 and 28 and observe a two day National Mourning in honour of the victims of the recent religious crisis which claimed several lives.
The statement by CAN (read full statement), which was read by her President, the Most Rev. Peter Akinola Sunday in Abuja during the service of inauguration of the League of Anglican Media Professionals (LAMP), said during the ‘period of mourning no Christian shall go to work, no shop, market, nor office is to be opened.’
‘This is no holiday – but a time to mourn, weep, repent, and to pray for our country’, Abp. Akinola emphasized.
The Christian body also requested law enforcement agents and the judiciary to prosecute perpetrators of recent religious riots.
The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Maccido was commended for ‘giving leadership to the Islamic community not to allow a spread of the wanton destruction’.
Members of the Nigerian Police force were also commended for their ‘valour and responsible behaviour’ during the crisis that torched several states in the country.
Earlier, Abp. Akinola urged the commissioned members of the LAMP to uphold Christian principles in the practice of their professional.
By way of history, Akinola recalled that the first newspaper in the country Iwe Irohin, was published by Anglican Missionaries in 1859 at his hometown, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
“The advent of western education in the country was also pioneered by the Church Missionary Society (CMS),” he said.
Lamenting the decline in the vision of the founding fathers of the country, Akinola urged the media professionals to use their skill, eloquence and creative ability to restore hope to the nation.
Further,
he encouraged them to live-up their acronym ‘LAMP’ and quoted from the
scripture ‘Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good
works and glorify your Father in heaven (Matt 5:16).
The service of inauguration of the League of Anglican Media Professionals was held at the Cathedral Church of the Advent Abuja.
